Healing Winter Soups with Michael Becherer – Feb 22, 2:30-5 PM

What is more comforting than a bowl of homemade soup?

Soup is the most nourishing meal we can eat, as it keeps you hydrated, balances blood sugar, and is chock full of minerals! If there is only one thing you learn to make well from scratch, it should be soup, as the health benefits are unparalleled!

In this class macrobiotic teachers Michael Becherer and Rachel Zierzow will demonstrate the techniques for making two different kinds of soup, a hearty bean and vegetable soup (Fiesta Black Bean Soup) and a creamy vegetable soup (Creamy Butternut Squash Soup with Fresh Rosemary).

You’ll discover:

  • The health benefits of each soup and their ingredients
  • Tips for slicing and dicing vegetables, tips for making delicious and digestible beans from scratch
  • How to achieve the right texture for your soups (not to thin, not too thick)
  • How to layer ingredients for optimal flavor
  • How to season your soups
  • How to vary each soup type with different ingredients to make a whole new recipe!

Then we will sit down to try our soups with time for Q&A.

Everyone will go home with recipes to make throughout the year at home.

$60 for class, tastings, and recipes.

Introduction to Ayurveda with Charlotte Jernigan – Feb 28, 2-5 PM

Treat yourself to an afternoon of wonderfully homemade food that will nourish your mind, body, and spirit! 

Guided by Ayurvedic health counselor Charlotte Jernigan and Natural Foods Chef Rachel Zierzow, you’ll discover what foods are most beneficial to your body type and how to prepare a meal that is healing, easy to digest, and absolutely delicious!

The class begins with a fun quiz about your individual body type (vata, pitta, kapha). You’ll discover how to choose ingredients and cooking methods that will create balance and health and minimize symptoms.

Chef Rachel will demo the main dishes, and you’ll get to participate in making fresh chutneys, learning how to adjust for the different tastes, sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent.

Meal will consist of Fortified Basmati Rice, Spiced Moon Dal, Seasonal Vegetable Subji, and Fresh Chutneys.

$75 for 3 hour class and meal.
